Frightened Rabbit Interview
I told you these guys were awesome...just sayin.
Now the fine folks over at GQ are making the same realization (trend spotter anyone). Check out this totally sweet interview GQ writer Steve Heisler did with Frightened Rabbit lead singer/songwriter Scott Hutchison.
It's 6pm on a Friday where you are; I'm not calling you at the bar or anything, am I? Oh, no. That would have been terrible. I just wouldn't have answered.
The 2010 Olympics in Vancouver are more than just games. A free outdoor concert series called LiveCity has been scheduled around the Winter Games for fans entertainment.
One of the most anticipated acts was the performance by Alexisonfire, a post-hard-core-metal band originally from Canada. It was so anticipated that the crowd got a little out of control.
A crowd surge that caused a barricade to break at an Alexisonfire performance during the Olympics in Vancouver resulted in 19 people being sent to hospital. The incident occured at the start of the band's set and the concert ended immediately. Fortunately, only one person suffered serious injuries, that being a compound leg fracture. The band was performing as part of LiveCity, a series of free outdoor concerts in Vancouver during the Winter Games.
Shit, one good crowd surge has to go and ruin the concert for everybody. Sorry I missed it.
Here is the video for their hit song "The Northern":
From the people that brought you "Just Do It" (aka Nike) comes this latest ad spot that broke during the Olympic opening ceremonies. As usual, its sick. How can Nike get you so pumped up? (that's what she said)
Here's the thing about college. Everyone falls into one of three categories:
You are in college and luvin every minute.
You went to college and remember luving every minute.
You went to college and got so fucked up you can't remember it...but you're pretty sure you luved every minute.
That's it. And you know its true. But it doesn't really matter which category you fall into. The point is, college is awesome. To help everyone re-live it, for only a moment, is new internet rap sensation Asher Roth with his hit song "I Love College".
Checkit:
(Attn: Moms) Help your kid out. He is gonna need the right stuff to gear up for a night like this...or to help him clean up after a night like this. Automated Man has what you need and will deliver it right to his dorm room.
I have no idea if these guys are a joke or not...I'll let you decide for yourself. However, I am compelled to bring their (story?) forth for inspection.
According to their own self-description:
Die Antwoord is a lovable, mongrel-like entity made in Zuid, Afrika, the love-child of many diverse cultures, black, white, coloured and alien, all pumped into one wild and crazy journey down the crooked path to enlightenment.
Its a bloody-fierce, hi-energy, techno-rap, ninja-fueled production straight from the streets of Southern Africa. I bring them to you for two reasons:
Their sound must be heard and their style must be seen. Joke or not, I couldn't stop watching. Check the video below.
Their website is very entertaining. Check it out here and be sure to click on "secret chamber" for a trippy-ass ride.
This may just be the next big thing. Keep an eye on Die Antwoord.
You know that feeling when you hear a catchy song and it gets stuck in your head and no matter what you do you can't seem to get the tune to stop playing in your mind? Well, I've had that feeling about Thrice's new song "In Exile" of their latest album Beggars since the day it was released, November 24th. Yep, that means I've had the same song stuck in my head for almost 50 DAYS.
I'd like to quote Brian Fantana here:
"It's made with bits of real panther, so you know it's good."
Except that the "panther" would have to be replaced with something like "total-fucking-rock-god-awesomeness".
Take a gander here:
(Automated Man not responsible if song gets stuck in your head)
Thrice is a badass band (period). I won't take any lip from those of you that disagree. They are an icon of musical innovation and excellence.
Frontman Dustin Kensrue has launched a solo project and just released a Christmas album titled This Good Night Is Still Everywhere. Here is his song "This Is War" and a video interview explaining what the song means to him.
Maybe you've heard of a small time guitarist named Jack White...just maybe. If so, then you probably know of his latest project "The Dead Weather". This alt-rock supergroup formed when Jack White teamed up with Alison Mosshart (The Kills, and ridiculously good looking chick), Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age) and Jack Lawrence (The Ractonteurs).
They have put out one of the most bad ass videos ever...for their hit single "Treat Me Like Your Mother". Check it out here:
"One Gift, A Thousand Fantasies" is the tagline for this new Victoria's Secret commercial directed by the famous Michael Bay. Enticing...but my supermodel fantasies never involve helicopters and exploding cars. WTF was he thinking?
The commercial debuted at the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show on December 2nd and, dear god, I can't wait to NOT see it on TV. I hate anything that takes away from T&A. What can I say, I'm a purist.
What happens when Red Bull teams up with Shaun White...we get the craziest shit ever seen in the world of snowboarding! Ladies and gents, may I present to you Project X.
It all started with the idea of building a secret half pipe way up in the Colorado backcountry so that the world's most radical rider, Shaun White, could practice in private and invent the most mind-melting tricks the world has never seen! Well, they did it...he's there...and you're not.
Jealous? Don't be. Head on over to the Project X website for the latest. You'll find some of the sickest video ever recorded and all the latest updates on the Flying Tomato's secret mission.
The U.S. gets an exclusive perk from Rise Against...finally!
The band has just released a new cut of their video "Savior" that is only available in the USA.
According to the band:
We received so much great feedback from our last music video, "Savior", so we decided to compile another version of the video for everyone to check out. This one is focused more on the performance ( i.e; us trashing equipment). Enjoy.
Remember that hot virgin chick from Entourage named Justine Chapin? Yeah, me too! Apparently she has a real name, Leighton Meester. This behind the scenes video of her is sofa king hot.
Remember way back in the day when Microsoft, in a brilliant marketing scheme, gave away its operating system on all new PCs, thus making all consumers slaves to Microsoft software as long as they owned the machine? Yeah...why do I get eerily reminiscent when I read about the OLPC program?
One Laptop Per Child, on the surface, appears to be an incredible benevolent program designed to put technology in every childs hand in order to promote education. Its mission is:
"To create educational opportunities for the world's poorest children by providing each child with a rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop with content and software designed for collaborative, joyful, self-empowered learning."
The non-profit organization is lead by chairman Nicholas Negroponte and is funded by member organizations including: AMD, Brightstar Corporation, eBay, Google, Marvell Technology Group, News Corporation, SES, Nortel Networks and Red Hat. The goal of the foundation is to provide children around the world with new opportunities to explore, experiment, and express themselves. OLPC is designing a laptop, educational software, manufacturing base, and distribution system to provide children outside of the first-world with otherwise unavailable technological learning opportunities.
OLPC lists five core principles:
Child ownership
Low ages.
Both hardware and software are designed for elementary school children ages 6–12.
Saturation
Connection
Free and open source
But why produce a limited machine that will require upgrade as the child grows? We all know how quickly technology becomes obsolete. If children between ages 6-12 get a machine that is theirs to keep (and they can't afford to purchase a new one) then how will the machine keep up with them as they learn?
Lets leave that alone for a minute...
So far, over a million computers have been distributed. Primarily in developing 3rd world nations that do not yet have intricate computer networks and web technologies...but they soon will. Hmm. And in a not-so-publicly-stated move, OLPC is offering large scale purchasers the choice to add the proprietary Windows XP operating system to their orders. Huh, that seems odd.
In a strange bit of gossip, OLPC's stated ethos that "It's an education project, not a laptop project" was contradicted according to Ivan Krstić, OLPC's former Director of Security Architecture.
"I quit when Nicholas told me — and not just me — that learning was never part of the mission. The mission was, in his (Negroponte's) mind, always getting as many laptops as possible out there; to say anything about learning would be presumptuous, and so he doesn’t want OLPC to have a software team, a hardware team, or a deployment team going forward." -Ivan Krstic, May 13, 2008
I don't know about you, but it would appear to me that the OLPC is hooking their claws into a new up-and-coming consumer base. Sure, let the kids learn...and then force them to buy your product in order to keep current. But that's just like, an opinion man.
I encourage, nay dare, you to post your opinions here and get the conversation rolling!
What happens when the lead singer of a heavy metal/punk band decides to hit the open road on a Harley and try to make a Hunter "eSque" Thompson style video? That's exactly what Keith Buckley from Every Time I Die did.
I don't know how to describe it...but its pretty fucking cool.
These guys have been rocking my face off for months now and I just can't get enough. What started in America has been perfected in Scotland (and you can't say that about anything else). Here is a crash course in Scottish Emo.
Frightened Rabbit A band from Glasgow with an arsenal of hits from their album "the midnight organ fight" including one of my favorite songs "keep yourself warm". Keep your ears open for a new album dropping November 16th.
Twilight Sad Their latest hit titled "i became a prostitute" blew me away but their acoustic sessions really put me over the top.
We Were Promised Jet Packs These guys sound like an indie band straight outta NYC...but with Scottish accents. Check out their hit song "roll up your sleeves".
I've had the pleasure of seeing all 3 acts in concert at The Knitting Factory in LA and can tell you first-hand what an amazing performance these guys put on live. Keep an eye out...Scottish emo is taking over the States.
You may have tried one of these tricks on your friends who may have been too wasted too realize you were writing profanity on their forehead. One of our favorite music videos... an ode to friends, alcohol and passing out. Enjoy "We Are your Friends" by Justice.
